Description

A delightful Orange Creamsicle Cake that captures the essence of summer with fluffy layers of orange cake and rich orange buttercream frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract (for frosting)
  • Zest of 1 orange (for frosting)
  • Orange food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your baking station: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, combine softened butter and granulated sugar. Beat with your electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Incorporate eggs and flavors: Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract, orange extract, and orange zest.
  4. Dry ingredients meet wet: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder. Gradually add to the creamed mixture, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with flour.
  5. Divide and smooth: Pour the batter evenly into prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake to perfection: Bake for 25-30 minutes. Test doneness with a toothpick, and let cool for 10 minutes in pans before transferring to wire racks.
  7. Create the frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually incorporate powdered sugar, heavy cream, orange extract, and zest until fluffy.
  8. Assemble your masterpiece: Once cakes are cool, frost between layers and on top and sides. Create desired design with a spatula.
  9. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle additional orange zest on top and slice the cake for serving.

Notes

Make-ahead tips include baking the cakes a day before and frosting them the next day for freshness. Customize the flavor extracts as desired.
